ECCMID 2017 sets impressive record with 12,494 participants from 126 countries
VIENNA (May 2017) – The 27th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) set a new participant record. Hosted by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESMID), the event made its Messe Wien debut from 22-25 April this year. 12,494 participants from 126 countries attended ECCMID 2017, the majority of whom were from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the USA.
Extensive expert medical programme
The scientific programme featured more than 200 lectures and 12 keynotes on infectious diseases and clinical microbiology by 381 guest speakers. Participants also had access to more than 100 symposiums, 20 training workshops and 20 meet-the-expert sessions. The 195 corporate exhibitors contributed a further 26 industry symposiums. 5,223 abstracts were submitted – some hot off the press – of which more than 3,300 were presented at the event, either orally, as e-posters or in printed form. 70 media representatives also attended the event.
Highlights of ECCMID 2017
Thierry Calandra’s keynote talk was one of the highlights of ECCMID. The respected medical expert received this year’s ESCMID Excellence Award in recognition of his life’s work. The primary focuses of ECCMID 2017 were the four main infectious diseases: HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis and malaria. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, gave one of the keynotes on HIV, Sir Nicholas White talked about eradicating malaria and Wenhui Li presented the discovery of a hepatitis B receptor.
Organisers praise Messe Wien as conference location
The event organisers were highly satisfied with their choice of Messe Wien as the venue for ECCMID, and were full of praise for the Reed Exhibitions team as well as the location. “We hosted our event at Messe Wien for the first time in 2017. The location really won us over as it matched our requirements precisely. It is exactly what we need for a successful ECCMID. The Reed Exhibitions team is highly professional, exceptionally efficient, extremely flexible and has a wealth of experience when it comes to hosting large-scale international congresses,” said ESCMID Executive Director Judith Zimmermann (+++)
